I am intending this trip to make a return visit to the Wessex Club Hut - http://www.wessexmc.org.uk/wmc/pyc.php - at Betws y Coed. However, the club tells me that the hut is undergoing renovation work. Whilst we can still stay there during these works there is NO hot water, NO gas for cooking and NO lighting. The log fire still works, as does the toilet.
However Betws has many fine hostelries so I don't really think that the lack of a few home comforts is that big a problem. What could be better than staggering back sated to a cosy "cottage" after a Dickensian repast and telling tales around a roaring fire with faces lit only by the dancing flames?
The cost of a night is £3.00pp.
Options: the area is perfect for early starts and long ridge walks on both the Snowdon and Glyder massifs. The Snowdon Horseshoe is always entertaining, and Tryfan is equally impressive. Alternatively there is less frequented (but possibly very boggy) walking in the Moel Siabod and Pen Llithrig areas.
There is gear shopping at Betws and a fair amount of history and ancient monuments along both the A5 and A470.
