Tuesday Night Talks

It's time to shake up the Tuesday night meets at the Dolphin and we thought a series of hiking, climbing and cycling talks would do the trick. They will run from 8.30pm-9.30pm and then the usual members / new members catch-up can continue.

Dates for your diaries so far:

October 13th
December 8th

October 13th

John Haigh from Hungerford, who takes craft and cycling tours to Ghana in the school holidays, will be talking about:

Four ferries and a flood - cycling across Lake Volta, Ghana
Two weeks cycling across, up, around and down the world's largest man-made lake - how two people developed new muscles, and one fine bike was brought close to death by bad roads, heavy loads and butchers disguised as mechanics.

December 8th

Ruth with Cho Oyo in the background, Himalayas

Ruth Croome has been living her dream of travelling to some wonderful destinations and visiting the great mountain ranges.  In between short stints at home in the UK, she now travels as much as possible, leads trips abroad and gives travel lectures. On the 8th she will be talking about:

Peru is South America's third largest country, a land of fascinating contrasts with mountain scenery and trekking to rival that of the Himalayas. From the impressive Inca remains at Cusco, Pisac and Machu Picchu, to the spectacular and remote vastness of the glaciated Central Andes, Peru has something for everyone. Ruth Croome presents an account of her month-long travels in Peru which includes the fabulous Cordillera Huayhuash trek and a visit to the foot of Siule Grande (of "Touching the Void" fame). The talk is illustrated with numerous high quality digital images.

Life On Ice

Hannah McKeand, a British polar explorer, holds the record for the fastest journey to the South Pole. A 600-nautical-mile (1,100 km) journey which she completed solo and in just 39 days, 9 hours and 33 minutes. In March 2008 she attempted to reach the North Pole alone and unsupported but had to abandon the trip after falling through the ice and badly damaging her shoulder. Now, she will be sharing her latest adventures with Newbury Mountain Club. Put the date in the diary and watch this space for further details. Hannah supports and fundraises for Cancer Research UK, so a small donation at the end of the evening would be gratefully appreciated.
