So, the plan is to fly into Girona on Sat 22nd, pick up as few hire cars as we can cram into & drive the 3-4hs to the mountains & the first nights accommodation. This will be in the first hut above the small town of Espot. In the past you could drive to about 500m from the hut, but in the last few years the car park has been moved further down the valley, but it is a short hike.
From there we’ll have 7 days of hut to hut in the national park. As it will be september the trees should be on the turn – most are beech so with luck they should give a ‘New England’ feel to the mountains as the leaves turn an auburn hue.
The huts in this part of Spain are not as salubrious as those in Austria, but the food has improved & the facilities ( some offering wifi it seems ) likewise.
Cost of the week – transport from the UK & all the way back ( inc airport parking, car hire etc ) should be under £200pp.
Daily rates in the huts are approx £15 for a bed ( £5 less with an Alpine Club card ) and an evening meal & breakfast another £20.00 a day. Drinks ( often the local vino tinto is cheaper than the bottled water ) depends on how thirsty one is after a long hike, but we do tend to try & break the hut record most nights……some of the huts give discount on the food to members of the local club & a good way to spend the evening is arguing the **** with the hut guardian as to why an Alpine club or BMC reciprocal rights card does not give the same deal.
There is an established route around the park, the ‘Carros de Foc’ which is do-able if the party is strong, willing & able to do a few longish days. There is ( not that I remember ) and via ferrata, or any technical sections.
Peaks – The highest point is Besiberri Sud at 3023m, a PD route. There are several other summits all under 3000m with the iconic peaks of the national park the much photographed Damtiges needles above the Sant Maurici lake see here
