Peak District – Dovedale

Date / Time
Date(s) - 22 Mar 2019 until 24 Mar 2019 5:00 pm

Staying in the nice looking Sheen bunkhouse (YHA but independently run) in the south of the Peak District.

We have sole occupancy of the bunkhouse. It sleeps up to 14 people and has separate lounge area, 1 x 6 person room and 1 x 8 person room.

Cost is £470 for the weekend in total so divide that by the number of people going. Assume the cost will be £15-20 pppn max.

The main walk for the Saturday is a couple of miles drive away to the start point in Alstonefield. The plan is an 11 mile walk along Dovedale through the valley following the river Dove. There’s a few opportunities to scramble up the steep sides and explore some of the many caves and bag some trig points too. Then we take the stepping stones across the river with another steep climb (optional) to take in Bunster Hill ridge before dropping back down again. We then pick up the Manifold trail heading north above the valley before descending at Beeston Tor and grabbing a last trig point on the way back to the car (or the pub).
The walk can easily be changed for those wanting to stick to the river path and miss out the up/down bits.

Sunday is as yet unplanned. There is a good opportunity for some climbing at the ‘Roaches’ just a couple of miles away or for those remaining on foot to continue exploring the Manifold Way or to head north into the dark peaks.

The trip is suitable for families/children although please double-check first as the bunkhouse only has two larger rooms so may depend how this can be organised.
