Brecons Crash Sites

Date / Time
Date(s) - 30 Aug 2024 until 1 Sep 2024 5:00 pm

During World War II aircrew training took place over these mountains and sadly many airmen lost their lives, usually during foul weather – there are 30 aircraft crash sites in the National Park.

We are going to base ourselves at the excellent campsite beside Dan Yr Ogof caves. This gives us direct access onto the Black Mountain where we will have a fun couple of days testing our navigation skills to locate some of these sites. Obviously they are not conveniently located on public footpaths, so we will be going off track to find them; this is a wild area with many interesting rock formations and sinkholes so there will be plenty of other features to see apart from wreckage!

Details of the campsite can be found here: The Camp Site (brecon-beacons-camping-and-caravanning.co.uk). It is £10 per person per night to camp or if you are bringing a campervan or moho it is £30 for a fully serviced pitch for 2 people. A few people have already said they are coming so we will pre book pitches for those who confirm they are definitely coming. As payment for the site is on arrival, the “fair weather” campers may wish to decide a few days before and take their chance on pitch availability.
