Marlborough Downs & Barbury Castle

Meet 9.50 for 10am start
Join me on this lovely walk up to Barbury Castle, from Og Maizey, along byways and footpaths, over chalk downland and alongside ‘gallops’. Red kites in abundance! We will eat our sarnies at the hillfort which has great views across the downs and over to the fair town of Swindon(!). The route back takes us along Smeathes Ridge – part of the Ridgeway NT – which is an absolute joy. Then we wiggle our way through the ‘Ogs’ back to the cars.
This is a 10-11 mile walk but pretty easy going – no steepness, just gentle ascent (176m) and descent. About 4.5 hours (plus lunch stop). A lot of racehorses (and some livestock) are in the area doing their thing so dogs need to be under close control.
Park in the large layby (marked P on OS) between Marlborough & Ogbourne Maizey on the A346. (It’s just north of Marlborough)
