Windermere Coast-to-Coast – Lake District

Date / Time
Date(s) - 29 Apr 2016 until 30 Apr 2016 All Day

What/where: A long weekend high-level backpacking trip with hostelling options in the Lake District. Not for the faint-hearted!

Accommodation: Subject to booking, but plan is - Friday night at Coniston Coppermines YHA in shared dorms (£22), Saturday night wildcamp, Sunday night your choice of another wildcamp or a stay at Honister Hause YHA (£17). Total cost therefore about £22-£39 excluding food and transport. If anyone is interesting in coming but not camping, there may be an option to divert from the route midway on Saturday, stay in Langdale and rejoin the group on the Sunday. I say “may” because accommodation options are very limited and you would need to book that night asap as it’s a bank holiday weekend. Sarah is happy to discuss this option in detail with anyone interested.

Transport arrangements: Drive to Coniston Coppermines YHA on Friday afternoon/evening. Walk the route to Ennerdale Bridge. A car shuffle (36 miles) will be required.

Route: Saturday’s main route is approx 17km, across Coniston Old Man, Brim Fell, Swirl How, Great Carrs, Crinkle Crags, Bow Fell and Esk Pike, with alternative/additional options on Dow Crag, Wetherlam, Cold Pike, Pike o’ Blisco and Great Knott. Sunday starts in the heart of the action and there are tons of options on peaks (Allen Craggs, Great End, Broad Crag, Ill Crag, Scafell Pike, Sca Fell, Lingmell) depending how fit you are and how comfortably you slept! Shortest route would simply take you approx 8km across Great Gable, Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Knotts and to Honister Hause, but there are again options (on Seathwaite Fell, Kirk Fell and Base Brown). Fleetwith Pike is also a nice easy option from the YHA/camping ground. Monday takes a fairly long but relatively straightforward 17-20km route down over Haystacks, Seat, High Crag, High Stile, Red Pike, Starling Dodd, Great Borne and Herdus. 33 Wainwrights, can any of you get them all?!?!

MMM: Depends what you do, but easily in excess of 13,000m.

Booking: Accommodation needs to be booked very soon, so expressions of interest now invited to Sarah Roberts.
